Cognizant’s GenC programme is its main fresher hiring engine, with recent packages between roughly ₹4 LPA (GenC) and ₹6.75 LPA (GenC Next). This guide explains the difference between the tracks, the 2026 selection process, and how to prepare for each round.
GenC vs GenC Next vs GenC Pro
| Track | Typical CTC | What it takes |
|---|---|---|
| GenC | ~₹4 LPA | Aptitude + basic coding; the standard entry track |
| GenC Next | ~₹6.75 LPA | Strong DSA coding performance in the assessment |
| GenC Pro | varies | Specialised skills (cloud, data, SAP-type stacks) where offered |
You apply once; your assessment performance determines the track interview you’re invited to. Compare take-home pay across tracks with the in-hand salary calculator.
Round 1 — Online assessment
The GenC assessment typically includes: aptitude (quantitative ability, logical reasoning, verbal ability — standard fresher-exam topics at moderate difficulty); automata fix / code debugging (find and fix errors in short programs); and for GenC Next consideration, hands-on coding — usually 2–3 problems covering arrays, strings, hashing, and logic puzzles in C, C++, Java or Python. There have also been cycles with SQL questions and communication assessments, so skim all sections of your specific drive’s notice.
Build test-day speed with timed GenC-pattern practice sets.
Round 2 — Technical interview
Cognizant technical interviews for freshers focus on: your programming language of choice (be genuinely fluent in one — don’t list four); OOPs concepts with real examples; SQL queries (joins, GROUP BY, subqueries are perennial); basics of operating systems and networks; and your final-year project in detail. GenC Next interviews add live coding of DSA problems. The most-repeated questions are in our Cognizant interview questions bank — sorted by how often recent candidates reported them.
Round 3 — HR discussion
Expect: self-introduction, willingness to relocate and work in shifts, service agreement discussion, salary expectations (for freshers, the package is fixed — don’t negotiate, demonstrate awareness), and situational questions. Keep answers concrete and under 90 seconds. Prepare with the HR section of the Interview Question Bank.
Eligibility and documents
Typical criteria: 60% / 6.0 CGPA throughout, no active backlogs, and a full-time degree (B.E/B.Tech/M.E/M.Tech/MCA and often B.Sc/BCA for specific tracks). Keep marksheets, ID proof and passport-size photos scanned and ready — document mismatch is a silent rejection reason at onboarding. Current Cognizant and similar openings are always on the live drives page.
Preparation plan (3 weeks)
Week 1: aptitude foundations — one quant topic + one reasoning topic daily. Week 2: coding — a debugging exercise plus two easy/medium DSA problems daily; revise SQL joins. Week 3: full mocks alternate days; project story polishing; HR answers out loud. If you clear the assessment, switch entirely to the real interview questions for your final week.
FAQs
Is GenC easier than TCS NQT?
Comparable at the entry track. GenC Next’s coding bar is meaningfully higher — similar in spirit to TCS Digital.
Does Cognizant allow re-application?
Yes, typically after a cooling period (often 6 months) — check your rejection mail or the drive terms.
Is there a bond?
Cognizant fresher offers have included service commitments in some cycles; read your specific offer letter.
What batches can apply in 2026?
Drives specify batches; 2025 and 2026 graduates dominate current cycles. Watch the live drives page for your batch.
