HCL interview experience — what to expect
HCL’s fresher interview is shorter than most — typically 20-40 minutes. It runs as a combined round where the interviewer handles both technical and HR topics. The technical portion is genuinely not deep; the HR and logistics questions get more time than the technical ones. The 75% cutoff is enforced. Your academic percentage will be asked directly.
What they check technically
Your preferred language — then a few basics. Python students get list vs tuple, basic OOPs. Java students get OOPs, arrays, string operations. C students get pointers, arrays, basic data types.
OOPs fundamentals — all four pillars with simple real-world examples. Access modifiers (public, private, protected) came up specifically in multiple HCL experiences.
SQL — DELETE vs TRUNCATE, basic queries. Nothing complex.
Data structures basics — arrays, linked lists, sorting algorithms at a conceptual level. Bubble sort and selection sort came up.
String programs — reverse a string, find the second largest element. Nothing that needs a compiler.
The HR and logistics questions — the real interview
Academic percentage. 10th, 12th, B.Tech percentages are asked explicitly. HCL has a cutoff and verifies it in the interview itself.
Bond agreement. HCL has a service bond and they want explicit confirmation you’ll sign it.
Relocation across India. HCL can post you anywhere. They want a direct “yes” — not a qualified answer.
24/7 shifts. This comes up in every single experience. If you’re okay with it, say so clearly.
Rate yourself 1-10. HCL asks this for technical skills and overall. 7 with a brief explanation of what you’d improve is a reasonable answer.
What this means for prep
HCL’s interview is essentially a fitness check: basic technical competence, plus willingness to relocate, work shifts, and stay through the bond period. Prepare your answers to the HR questions as deliberately as you prepare your OOPs definitions.
